Claude Ultra, Max and Pro: price and limits after the Oct 30, 2026 rename

You don't need $200 a month to use full Claude. But if you're thinking about it, here is what just changed.

On October 30, 2026, Anthropic announced on X: "We're renaming our Max plans: Max 5x → Max, Max 20x → Ultra. Max is still $100/month, and Ultra is still $200." The big news is in the next line: Anthropic is removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts. Weekly limits stay the same.

2. What changed with Claude Ultra

  • New names. Max 5x is now just "Max". Max 20x is now "Ultra". Pro stays Pro.
  • Same prices. Max is $100. Ultra is $200. No one pays more.
  • No 5-hour limit on verified Ultra. This is the real change. Before, every plan reset on a rolling 5-hour window. Now a verified Ultra account only has a weekly budget.
  • Weekly limits unchanged. Anthropic says it plainly: "Weekly limits remain unchanged." Ultra is described as 10x Pro's weekly usage.
  • Max keeps the 5-hour limit. If you're on the $100 Max plan, nothing about your limits changed.

Note the wording. Max 20x meant 20x Pro per 5-hour session. Ultra is described as 10x Pro per week. Those are two different measures, so don't read Ultra as a cut or a boost. It's a weekly budget you can spend as fast as you like.

3. What "verified" means

Anthropic says the 5-hour limit is removed "starting today with most existing subscribers." Newer accounts keep a temporary 5-hour limit until they are verified, which Anthropic says helps prevent fraud and abuse. You'll get an email when it's removed.

  1. Verification is automatic, based on things like account age and payment history.
  2. You can't request it or speed it up. Verifying a phone number at checkout is a different thing.
  3. To check: open Settings > Usage. If there is no "Current session" bar, your 5-hour limit is gone.

5. Who Claude Ultra is for

Get Ultra if you run Claude Code or long agent jobs for hours and keep hitting the 5-hour wall. The no-session-limit change is made for you. The $200 in API credits also helps if you build on the Claude API.

Stay on Max or Pro if you mostly chat, write and do research. Most people never hit Pro's weekly limit, let alone Ultra's. If your problem is "I want the best Claude model" and not "I keep running out", $200 is a lot to pay.

Also new: Anthropic's Ultracode mode in Claude Code is a different thing from the Ultra plan. Ultracode is a coding effort setting; Ultra is a subscription.

6. Use full Claude without paying $200

Yes, you can use Claude's top models without an Ultra plan. In Sumus, Claude works as an AI employee in your team chat, next to GPT, Gemini and Grok. Hand it a task, let it work, and your whole team sees the result in the same thread. You pay for what you use, not a $200 seat for one person.

What we're watching

  • Whether the 5-hour limit change comes to Max or Pro.
  • How long verification takes for new Ultra accounts.
  • Local prices for Ultra on mobile app stores.
