Grok 5 Release Date: When Is It Coming? (Latest Signals, Oct 2026)

Grok 5 has no release date yet. As of October 28, 2026, xAI (now SpaceXSI) has not announced Grok 5, and its current flagship is Grok 4.7. Elon Musk has given two Grok 5 dates, end of 2025 and Q1 2026, and both passed. His newest roadmap gives no date at all; it just puts two more models in front of Grok 5.

We track every Grok 5 claim on this page and update the same URL the day xAI ships. Here is what is confirmed, what is only claimed, and what to watch.

2. Grok release timeline: where Grok 5 fits

After a full year between Grok 4 and Grok 4.5, xAI shipped three models in about two months. Grok 4.7 is now 37 days old, so by the old rhythm Grok 4.8 is due. Musk said on Sep 14 that Grok 4.8 would finish pre-training "this week" and start reinforcement learning; six weeks on, it has not shipped.

Put the steps in a row: Grok 4.8, then Grok 4.9, then Grok 5. At 27–40 days per step, the Grok 5 release date lands between mid-December 2026 and late January 2027. That is arithmetic on xAI's own release dates, not a date xAI has given, and every past Grok 5 date has slipped.

3. What Elon Musk has said about Grok 5

Almost everything known about Grok 5 comes from Musk, not from xAI's site. The record:

• Aug 2025: Grok 5 "out before the end of the year" and "crushingly good".
• Nov 14, 2025 (Baron Investment Conference): training has begun, release moves to Q1 2026, about 6 trillion parameters, and a "10% chance" of reaching AGI.
• Dec 2025: "Grok 5 in a few months".
• Jan 6, 2026: xAI writes that Grok 5 is currently in training, the only official Grok 5 line.
• Sep 14, 2026: Musk ranks the next models in a reply: Grok 4.7 is "roughly on par with Opus 5.0", Grok 4.8 "a noticeable improvement", Grok 4.9 "probably Astra/Fable class", and "Grok 5 maybe better than anything. We shall see." (post on X)
• Oct 7, 2026: Musk says most Grok Bot requests will run on "a lightning-fast version of Grok 4.8 when that comes out".

Read together: Grok 5 is xAI's next big jump, and Musk has stopped attaching a date to it. The near-term model to watch is Grok 4.8.

4. What to expect from Grok 5

Scale. Musk's only number is about 6 trillion parameters. For reference, he called Grok 4.8 a 2.5T model; Grok 4.7 is widely described as about 2.1T. A 6T Grok 5 would be more than double the next model.

Training stack. Grok 4.8 is the first Grok trained on xAI's new C++ software stack. Grok 5 will very likely use it too, which is one reason 4.8 matters as a preview.

Compute. xAI said in January it ended 2025 with over one million H100 GPU equivalents across Colossus I and II. Grok 5 is the first model planned for that scale.

Pricing and access. Grok 4.7 costs $2 per 1M input tokens and $6 per 1M output tokens with a 500K context window, per the xAI models docs. xAI has kept the price flat from 4.6 to 4.7. Expect Grok 5 to launch first in grok.com, the Grok app, X and Grok Bot, then the API under a grok-5 model ID.

5. How to tell when Grok 5 is live

1. x.ai/news: every Grok model so far got an "Introducing Grok X" post on release day.
2. The xAI models docs: a new grok-5 entry and price row. The page was last updated Sep 21, 2026 for Grok 4.7.
3. @elonmusk and @xai on X: Musk usually posts the launch the same day.
4. Grok 4.8 and 4.9 shipping first. If Grok 4.8 drops, the Grok 5 clock starts.
