Claude Duet is a separate Claude app that comes to you first. Instead of waiting for a prompt, it reads your inbox, calendar and business tools, tells you each morning what needs you, and keeps working on tasks after you put your phone down. Anthropic announced it on X on October 21, 2026, and describes it in detail in its launch post.

It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, ships as iOS and Android apps plus a web version at claude.ai, and is aimed at professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track.

What Claude Duet does

Anthropic's demo follows Maya, who runs a coffee chain called Marlo. At 9:41 a.m. her lock screen says: "Morning, Maya. 5 things in progress and 2 that need you." The brief lists a hiring deadline, a redlined $410K renewal, a $640 health permit for a new Chicago café, a Series A deck and 27 wrong delivery orders with refunds already drafted.

From there the work happens in one thread:

  • Investor prep. Duet rebuilt the Series A deck with Q3 numbers, filled 25 of 26 data-room documents, read the bios of all six Harbor partners and their last three consumer deals, and drafted answers to the two questions they were likely to ask.
  • A daily dashboard. Asked for "one page I can check every morning," it pulled point-of-sale, Shopify, CRM, support, payroll and bank data into a dashboard that refreshes at 5:30 a.m.
  • Unprompted insight. It noticed East Bay subscription churn rose from 2.6% to 3.4% after a shipping price change, estimated free shipping over $40 would keep about 7 in 10 of those customers, and proposed a two-week test.
  • Business chores. Chasing unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe, preparing payroll in Gusto, drafting HubSpot follow-ups, posting jobs to LinkedIn, sending contracts through Docusign and running a Shopify store.

It can also buy things for a business through Stripe's Link wallet, paying with a virtual card so your real card number is never shared, and check out with Shop Pay.

How Claude Duet works: proactive by design

Diagram of the Claude Duet loop: watch connected apps, morning brief, work on a cloud VM, ask for approval, deliver results
The Claude Duet loop, from Anthropic's launch details.

It starts from your existing Claude. Memory, skills and connected apps carry over from your Claude account, so there is almost nothing to set up. Everything lives in one ongoing thread you can type or talk into.

It checks in every few hours, not nonstop. Duet scans your connected accounts on a schedule because constant checking would burn through plan limits. You can tell it what you want to hear about and how often.

It works while you are away. Duet has its own virtual machine with a browser. Describe a task in one message and it decides which apps and steps to use, then notifies you when the work is done or needs review.

You keep the important decisions. It reads, drafts and prepares on its own, but shows you the exact message, payment, signature or deletion and waits for approval. Credentials follow the Claude Managed Agents design, so Duet never sees your passwords or sign-in tokens. Every action passes the same auto mode classifier used in Claude Code, and a new classifier blocks sharing card numbers and government IDs outright.

What early users on X are saying

The first hands-on posts landed within hours. One early tester called the multitasking "probably the best in the space": you brain-dump into a single chat and Duet spins off separate task threads automatically, so the main conversation never gets tangled. The same tester said it proposed a batch of tasks on its own and asked for the go-ahead, and built several pull requests he could review. A product creator who had early access ranked it the most proactive personal agent out of the box, with the best model behind it, but noted it cannot yet drive a visible browser. Others flagged the obvious worry: background checks eat into Pro limits.

How to get Claude Duet access (waitlist)

  1. Make sure you are on a Claude Pro or Max plan with a US account.
  2. Open the Claude Duet product page on claude.com and select Join the waitlist.
  3. Wait for Anthropic's email, then install the iOS or Android app or open Duet on claude.ai.
  4. Connect email and calendar first; add payment and business tools once you trust its judgment.

There is no public date for other countries or for Team and Enterprise plans.

Claude Code is the closest sibling: Duet is essentially that agent loop moved to a phone and pointed at business tools instead of a repo. Against Dots, Grok Bot and Muse, Duet's edge is proactivity and Opus 5.5; its weak spot is personal errands such as booking tickets, which Anthropic says are not as strong yet.

Claude Duet limits in the research preview

  • US Pro and Max only, by waitlist.
  • It can misread a thread or misjudge urgency, and miss something that arrives between check-ins.
  • It cannot show you its browser yet.
  • It lives in its own app, separate from the main Claude app.
  • Background checks and big jobs like decks or financial models use more of your plan's limits.
  • Some actions are off-limits even with approval, such as trading securities or moving money between accounts.

Where Sumus fits

Yes, you can have a proactive Claude agent working for you today, without a waitlist, and for your whole team rather than one person. In Sumus, AI employees run on Claude Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 with 1M context, the same model that powers Duet. They live in your team's group chat: you hand over a task in plain words, the AI employee pulls in other agents for the subtasks, and everyone sees the results in the same thread. The teammate in your chat is a Sumus AI Employee running Claude Fable 5.1: it takes the task, does the work and reports back without being asked twice.

Ask one to "check our inbox every morning and draft replies," "build the weekly sales dashboard" or "prep the investor deck from Q3 numbers," and your team reviews the output together. You can even bring the agents you already use, like Claude Code, into the chat. See how it works on the Sumus Claude page.

What we're watching

  • When the waitlist opens beyond the US and to Team and Enterprise plans.
  • Anthropic's promised safety deep dive on Duet in the coming days.
  • Whether Duet gets a separate price or higher limits after the preview, and how it merges with the main Claude app.

Is Claude Duet free?

There is no separate charge. Claude Duet is included in Claude Pro and Max during the research preview and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude.

Claude Opus 5.5. Anthropic says the model's judgment is what lets Duet decide what needs you, what can wait and when to check with you first.

Duet never sees your passwords, asks before sending, paying, signing or deleting, and blocks sharing card numbers and government IDs. It refuses to trade securities or move money between accounts even with approval.

Yes. Sumus AI employees run on Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 in your team's group chat, take tasks in plain words and return work your whole team can review, with no waitlist.
